Stegostoma fasciatum
(Other names Leopard Shark)
Map Image

Juveniles have distinct black and white bands. When they become adults they turn a light brown, and the bands turn to 'cheetah' spots which cover the entire body. They have two ridges on each side of the body that run from the head to the long 'belt-strap' looking tail. They are an inshore shark, usually seen in solitude around deep sandflats, but will often congregate in large numbers for mating. Unlike most types of sharks they don't have to keep moving, instead they pump water through their gills, known as 'ram-jetting'.
