Zebra LionfishDendrochirus zebra
(Other names Zebra Turkeyfish)
The Zebra Lionfish has a body that is reddish-brown with 'zebra-like' patterning of alternating thin light bands and thicker darker bands. Pectoral fins have small brown spots and also have 'aerial-like' extensions beyond webbing. They inhabit coastal and outer reefs and lagoons in shallow to fairly deep water of about 80m. They slowly cruise around coral heads in solitude, however also congregate just below the ceilings of large overhangs and in caves. They are a slow moving fish that exhibits no fear, which is not surprising as they have 13 venomous dorsal fin spines. Can be very dangerous to divers if threatened.
