Believed to have originated about 60 million years ago, the whale shark is the largest of all the fishes. They are a slow filter feeding shark living in only tropical and warm areas of about + or - 30 degrees latitude. Distinguishable from other sharks as they have ridges running along their back and white spots scattered over their body. Whale Sharks follow migratory patterns that may be related to the presence of their prey, and are often seen in shallow waters of estuaries and river mouths during seasonal shrimp blooms.
