Aetapcus maculatus
(Other names Smooth Prowfish & Tasmanian Prowfish)
Warty Prowfish map

The Warty Prowfish (Aetapcus maculates) is endemic to Australian waters.
It can vary in it's colouration from pale white, yellow, orange, pink to brown. Sometimes will have a series of dark botches or spots long the dorsal fin.

In adults the skin is warty and amazingly can be shed like the skin of a snake. This action removes epibiotic growth from the fish.

The Warty Prowfish can be found camouflaged on sponge reefs.
