Thorntail Stingray

Dasyatis thetidis
(Other names Black Stingray)
Map Image

This large Stingray is grey to black on top and a brilliant white underneath. It displays a row of thorns leading up the tail and on to the back. It can sometimes be mistaken for the Smooth Stingray Dasyatis brevicaudata , but the obvious identifier is the thorns. Like alot of Stingrays, the Thorntail carries a venomous sting in its tail, although not generally aggressive, caution should be taken when diving with these creatures.
