Striped Catfish

Plotosus lineatus
Map Image

Catfish get their name from the sensory whiskers that protrude from around the mouth area, these are used to detect food. The body is mainly brown to black with two cream to white stripes running from the tip of the snout down the length of the body. Small juveniles are black and are often found in large schools that move with a constant fluidity. These fish should not be handled as they have sharp venom packed spines in their dorsal and pectoral fins and can inflict a severe painful wound. If wounded first aid should be applied by placing the wound in hot water for a couple of hours and seek medical advice.
