Spotfin Anglerfish map

The Spotfin Anglerfish  (Antennarius nummifer) are variable in coloration  from almost all black through to yellow, orange, pink and red. A large dark blotch or spot can be found  toward the back of the fish just below the base of the dorsal fin. Smaller botches and/or spots can be found on the fins and across the body.

Like other Anglerfish they attract their prey by using a specialised rod (illicium) and on the end of the rod is attached the bait (esca) They use these tools to mimic the worms or fish, that their prey feed on. As the victim gets within range the Anglerfish will quickly strike using suction to drawn the fish into it's mouth.

The Spotfin Anglerfish has an esca shaped like a small shrimp for attracting it's prey.
