A grey to silver bodied fish with small scales and usually identified from other similar looking species by the small black spot just below the pectoral fin. All fins are generally a dark grey with the end of the caudal fin almost black. They are known to inhabit the cooler waters of southern australia along coastal reefs and bays in large schools around rocky areas. They have also been know to venture north to the more temperate waters of southern QLD though they are not as dominant here as they are found to be in the cooler southern waters.
