Hapalochlaena maculosa
(Other names Lesser Blue-ringed Octopus)
Southern Blue Ringed Octopus map

The Southern Blue Ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena macula) is small in size and found in the southern temperate waters of Australia. Normally inactive during the day choosing to hide in shells, emerging at night to feed.

The Southern Blue Ringed Octopuses base  body  colour is yellow with dark brown patches, tiny blue rings feature  across the body and arms and flash bright when it feels threatened.

They are one of the  few in the octopus family that does not produce any ink (although they still have an ink sac), it is thought that perhaps the strong visual colour displays of the octopus are enough to warn off likely predators, so the ability to produce ink as a defensive countermeasure is no longer required.

There have been no human fatalities link to this species of octopus, but they should be considered dangerous,  their bite can cause respiratory problems.

Size: 10cm Arm span (Maximum)
