The Sand Whiting's body is generally white below and silver to grey above and is identified from other fish by its yellow ventral and anal fins. Juveniles may display a small dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin (often very faded). It is usually found along sandy bottoms close to coastal shores, sand bars as well as estauries and bays.
