Russell's Snapper is identified by its silver to grey body with a black blotch/spot (which commonly lacks boldness of colour) located below the end of the dorsal fin along the lateral line. It is often known to be brownish in colour around the head and top of back. The pectoral, ventral and anal fin are distinctly yellow. Usually found along coral and offshore reefs.
