Red Bass

Lutjanus bohar
(Other names Two-spot Red Snapper)
Map Image

Although generally red to brown bodied the Red Bass may also appear to be silver bodied depending on depth and light. Darker shading (generally black) appears around all the fins. It has two distinct deep grooves that run from the eye down towards the snout and it may also sometimes display two small white spots on the back (as shown in the 2nd picture). It has been recorded that large adults have been known to cause ciguatera poisoning, making this a potentially hazardous fish but records of poisoning are few and far between. The Red Bass are generally found along coral and outer reefs.
