Leaf Scorpionfish

Taenianotus triacanthus
(Other names Paperfish)
Map Image

Colour is very variable from white to pink through to red and green. They have a very compressed body and a large 'sail like' dorsal fin that runs from the head to the tail fin. It is 'bearded' with small appendages on its 'chin'. Often seen swaying in the current mimicking a dead leaf. All these attributes mean they are very well camouflaged in their varying surrounds, from sitting on rocks and corals to being out in the open sands of coastal to outer reefs as well as deep water. They have venomous spines which can inflict serious pain, but not as bad as some of its relatives. Periodically shed their skin.
