Giant GrouperEpinephelus lanceolatus
(Other names Queensland Grouper, Giant Queensland Grouper)
Weighing up to a possible 290kg the Giant Grouper is considered to be one of the largest reef dwelling fish in the world. They are listed as a protected species under the NSW Fisheries Management Act 1994 and are also protected in WA waters. Their body displays a mottled pattern of dark greys to browns and often has irregular white/pale spots and blotches. It is commonly found in the warm temperate shallow waters of coral reefs often hiding in caves, under ledges and around wrecks.
