In the juvenile stage the upper half of the Foxface is black and the lower half is white with yellow on the backend above the anal fin area which continues over the caudal peduncle and fin area as well as the dorsal fin. They have a white line that runs down the face (top of head to snout) which remains in adulthood. As they mature into adults the the body starting from just after the pectoral fin becomes yellow. The head and chest are white with a black triangular patch on the chest running up to the pectoral fin and two black bands running from the snout through the eye up to the beginning of the dorsal fin. The fins have numerous small spines associated with venom glands which can inflict quite alot of pain. They are commonly found in pairs along coastal and outer coral reefs.
