Fortesque

Centropogon australis
Map Image

Adults are variable in colour from a bony-white to a brown, with irregular dark brown to black bands across body and eyes. Juveniles are a mottled brown and disguise themselves amongst sea-grass beds of sheltered bays and estuaries, often gathering in large numbers. Adults inhabit the same areas but are also found on rubbly slopes of inshore reefs. They have two spines on either side of their head which they are capable of projecting, and 16 dorsal spines which can inflict a painful sting.
