False StonefishScorpaenopsis diabolus
(Other names Devil Scorpionfish)
Has a large head, pointed snout and a humped-back. Its colour is variable from a reddish pink to blue, green or purple, depending on habitat. Often seen half-buried amongst rock and sand mimicking stones. When threatened it will raise its inner pectoral fins showing off bright colours to scare off predators. They inhabit shallow lagoons and protected reef flats. Its upper spine is branched unlike others within the family. Packs a nasty sting, yet not as dangerous as the Reef Stonefish, which it is commonly mistaken for. Size: 30cm (Maximum) Diet: Fishes & Crustaceans |
