Estuarine Stonefish

Synanceia horrida
(Other names Estuary Stonefish)
Map Image

The Estuarine Stonefish like its close relative the Reef Stonefish, holds the title for being the most venomous fish in the world. These camouflaged hunters lie patiently in wait for unsuspecting prey to pass close enough for them to strike. The difference between the Estuarine and Reef stonefish is this fish's eyes are set high on the boney ridge on top of the skull. Another way to identify a stonefish is by their large paddle like pectoral fins that they use to dig themselves into an ambush position. They can be found along coastal areas and estuaries. First aid procedure is to immerse the wound in hot water and to seek immediate medical attention. If the victim is unconscious CPR should be applied.
