Common Lionfish

Pterois volitans
(Other names Red Lionfish and Devil Firefish)
Map Image

The most distinguishing feature is their long feathery fins. They have a close banded body pattern of light brown and white. Coastal specimens are much darker and have large leaf-like appendages above the eyes. They inhabit various regions from brackish estuaries to clear offshore islands in lagoons and reefs. They seek protection during the day, then hunt at night using its large pectoral fins to enclose prey. They then stun them and swallow them in one strike. It is an extremely dangerous and venomous fish to divers. It is capable of striking in almost any direction with venomous spines on its dorsal (13), anal (4) fins and pelvis (1). Hotwater presses and an application of corticoids are the most common treatments when stung.
