Cockatoo WaspfishAblabys taenianotus

Quite easy to identify due to it's large sail like dorsal fin and paddle like pectoral fins the species is either brown, purple or red in colour some times a light blotch can be seen on around the nostrals and mouth. Often found in esturies and on coral reefs, you can over look this fish as it has a tendancy to just sit there and rock with the surge. The spines on the dorsal fin do carry venom and can give a painful sting. The Cockatoo Waspfish hunts at night. Size: 15cm in length (Maximum) Diet: Small Crustaceans & Invertebrates |
