Checkerboard WrasseHalichoeres hortulanus
Their colouration changes as they mature. Juveniles have thick black and white vertical bands across the body, and a black spot on the dorsal fin encompassed by yellow. Adults on the other hand, have a white body with black markings between each scale forming a 'checkerboard' pattern. Their head is a hazey yellow, with pinkish-orange stripes. There are also one or two yellow saddles on the top of its back . Juveniles stay near the protection of overhanging ledges amongst rubble and sand, venturing out more as they mature.
