Blue-spotted Stingray

Dasyatis kuhlii
Map Image

Best recognised by its long whip-like tail that has white bands on the tail and blue spots sparsely placed over their grey to olive coloured body. They have a dark mask running along the eyes and are white underneath. Often found in groups buried in the sand and are normally quite skittish and will swim away quickly if approached. They tail contains a stinging barb covered in venom that can deliver a painful sting. For this reason caution should be taken if seen while diving.
