Blotched Fantail Ray

Taeniura meyeni
(Other names Marbled Stingray)
Map Image

This large ray can often be found buried in the sand. It is dark/black on top with a mottled white pattern (sometimes it can be more white with mottled black blotches). The head can appear to be quite raised from the disc and the tail is normally around the same length as the disc. The tail contains one spine covered in venom that can deliver a painful sting. These rays are not aggressive and are known only to attack if they feel threatened or are provoked.
