Australian Sea LionNeophoca cinerea
As a result of nearly hunting these seals to the brink of extinction last century, all seals located in Australian Commonwealth waters are protected under the EPBC Act (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) . The Australian Seal Lion is currently listed as vulnerable with a population of around 10,000. Females give birth to a single pup. I have a friend who was lucky enough to dive with these wonderful animals in South Australia and he has rated as one of the best experiences of his life. Its main predator is the Great White Shark and they have a general life expectancy of approximately 12 years. Size: 2.5m (Maximum) Diet: Fish, Cephalopods & Crustaceans |
