Mackerel Boulder

Byron Bay - NSW
The principal feature is a rock band rising to 14 meters from a large sand flat at 20 meters This rock band is split by numerous deep often undercut fissures promising interesting exploration. At the north western corner there is a series of large bommies with narrow sand gullies between. Within these large bommies there are numerous holes, caves and fissures in which are often seen large cod, wobbegong sharks, loggerhead turtles and painted crayfish. During winter there are occasional sightings of enormous rays, some recorded at 80cm thick and a diameter of over 3 meters. These are usually seen on or over the central sand flat. Large pelagic species such as jewfish, kingfish, snapper and mackerel are frequent visitors. Spotted eagle rays , white lined black stingrays and blue spotted stingrays are common. Because of the moderate depth, this is a wonderful area for a leisurely exploration.
